the yellow river

sweeps away village

after village

Translated by the poet

All those crazy blue hills

All the blue hills slowly fade away

behind the advancing wall of cloud,

and suddenly

a naked tree rises in front

with implausible clarity.

An errant ray of the hidden sun

embellishes it abruptly,

almost ludicrous.

Its gnarled hands get tangled up, as if

the curtain-ripping light startles it

while it’s secretly immersed in private affairs.

The tree

looks mighty, many-armed, and fierce,

like the copper statue of a nude god.

As the ornate backdrop gets steadily lost

under thick layers of white,

every white wave is fringed with pure gold

along the slope of every hill.

The tall tower captures in its grasp

all that there is to hold.

As if a fire has broken out inside the summit’s window,

a sliver of flame dances around the pointed peak,

like a falling angel encircled by light.
